"A gifted winemaker of the old school."
2010 & 2012 Bertheau
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

The 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is Grand Cru in all but name. Bertheau's captures this site with a unique purity and soulfulness.

As is often the case with Burgundy, tracking down Bertheau's Amoureuses is very difficult. He only has 0.32ha in this sought after 1er Cru.

I'm happy to offer Bertheau's 2010 and 2012 Amoureuses, two vintages that he absolutely nailed.

Bertheau's wines are things of beauty. They thrive on elegance instead of power. They represent Chambolle without artifice - in all its regal, silken glory.

I was reminded of just how much I love Bertheau's wines earlier this week when I drank an absolutely captivating bottle of the 1987 Amoureuses. Kermit Lynch calls Bertheau "a gifted winemaker of the old school." That gives you a sense of style here - the mineral, earthy subtlety and finesse. The fact that Bertheau made such an impressive wine in an off-vintage clues you in to just how good the winemaking is here.

In vintages like 2010 and 2012, Bertheau kills it. Their pristine, transparent style thrives in these vintages. The wines are studies in harmony and grace. And the Amoureuses represent an absolute high point in the range: both are utterly beautiful expressions of silken elegance and a wide spectrum of fruit, flower, mineral and spice.

The 2010 Amoureuses shows an incredibly clear, terroir-soaked expression with diamond-cut precision. Burghound sums it up perfectly: "This understated and beautifully concentrated effort is a stunner of an Amoureuses."

You can think of the 2012 Amoureuses as 2010 with the volume tuned up. Without sacrificing any of the grace and precision, the 2012 kicks the intensity factor up with a more powerful mid-palate and generally grander scale. Amoureuses' incredible refinement and breeding is on bold display.

Bertheau has become something of an obsession for me. The combination of the throwback style to the wines, the choice holdings (Amoureuses topping the list) and the consistency keeps me coming back. I'm very happy to offer these.

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

Burghound: "This easily possesses the most complex nose in the range with its notably spicy aromas of plum, black cherry and lilac. There is a cool and restrained mouth feel that is very sophisticated as the supporting tannins are quite fine grained and the almost pungent minerality adds lift to the satin-textured finish that is markedly austere at present. Like the Charmes in 2012 this is more structured than it usually is."

Burghound: "A wonderfully, even exuberantly spicy mix of red currant, plum and floral nuances gives way to rich, elegant and impressively refined middle weight flavors that possess impeccable balance on the mineral-driven and utterly delicious finish. This understated and beautifully concentrated effort is a stunner of an Amoureuses that possesses a mouth feel of silk and lace."
