Felseneck GG Revisited:
A Legend in the Making
2011 Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck GG
"I daresay, if there are Grosse Gewachs in our time that will give chase to some of the prodigiously long-lived dry German Rieslings of yore, this is probably one of them."
-David Schildknecht
These are big words. However, for us they also ring very true.
After all, they refer to what's likely the dry wine of the vintage. And Schildknecht seems to concur: his recent coverage of the Nahe and Rheinhessen in 2011 places Schafer-Frohlich's Felseneck at the very top.
We've been huge fans of Schäfer-Fröhlich's 2011 Felseneck GG for quite some time. Stephen penned an offer last June.
To be honest, we never felt that this wine received the proper attention. After Schildknect's glowing review, it felt like time to revisit Schäfer-Fröhlich's incredible 2011 Felseneck.
Schäfer-Fröhlich (along with Weiser-Kunstler and Willi Schaefer) produced some the best wines in 2011. Tim said he had never harvested such beautiful grapes and you can taste it.
Schäfer-Fröhlich's 2011 Felseneck is pristine and rigorous. There's a fanatical precision to it as minerals and stone fruits unfurl across the palate.
This is simply a gorgeous wine. For German fanatics, for lovers of great wine, this deserves a place in your cellar. As Schildknecht's note makes clear, this is one to stock up on.

Felseneck Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru Dry)
John Gilman, "The 2011 Felseneck Riesling Grosses Gewächs is pure beauty on both the nose and palate. The stunningly refined nose delivers a complex mélange of tart orange, pink grapefruit, wild yeasts, crystalline slate minerality, citrus peel, a touch of lemongrass and again, a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and dancing, with a superb core of fruit, bright, zesty acidity, flawless balance and profound length and grip on the laser-like and boundless finish. This is just a humbling bottle of dry Riesling from a magical terroir!"
