Foillard's Côte du Py is a monument of Morgon. He is one of the greatest producers in Beaujolais. It's as simple as that.
There's very little to be said about Jean Foillard, perhaps the most renowned member of Kermit Lynch's spirited Gang of Four in Morgon, that hasn't been said already.
As such, we'll keep this short.
Foillard's Côte du Py is one of the wines that I love to have around. It's nimble, food friendly, finessed and with a sense of unmediated purity.

Sadly, Foillard's wines have started to show up in short supply in recent vintages. There was a time when retailers could order up whatever they needed. Now, it's allocated in three case quantities or less. Every year, we work hard to secure enough wine for an offer.
Honestly, it's a pain, but it's well worth it. Foillard is an essential part of our Beaujolais program.Why? Foillard doesn't miss.
Our advice is to stock up, and that's why we're offering 6-packs. The most common experience with Foillard is that you buy some and realize six months later that the bottles are just singing. It's almost inevitable that you kick yourself for not buying more.
You should save some for the cellar, as well. Foillard's 2011 will age well over the next five years+. The 2011 vintage in Beaujolais has round, vibrant fruit with a nice complementing freshness. If you think about a cross of 2009 and 2010, you get a fairly accurate picture.
Foillard's style is really successful in the 2011 vintage. There's a vivid, brisk freshness along with silken red fruits and a textured chalky minerality. The ripeness of the vintage endows the wine with the meaty depths that adds fascination to Foillard's wines.
Foillard is a master of Morgon and for me, it's unthinkable not to clear some cellar space each vintage. They are lovely, inspiring wines.
