A Real Beauty
2010 Valdicava Brunello Riserva Madonna del Piano

Posted by Ian McFadden

Riserva Madonna del Piano is one of the cult wines of Brunello. It works on a scale that is utterly singular.

Its range is mindboggling. The hallmarks of Madonna del Piano are lavish texture, haunting perfume and gorgeous finesse.

As you can imagine, in 2010 Madonna del Piano is a showstopper.

By now, most of you know that great things happened in 2010 in Montalcino. There's a magical combination of concentration and intensity along with verve and purity.

The 2010 Madonna del Piano is a monument of the vintage. 2010 produced one of the most striking examples of just how multi-dimensional the wine can be. Antonio Galloni nails it when he writes, "Powerful and dramatic, but also remarkably polished for such a big wine, the 2010 has a lot going on."

For all its full throttled intensity, there's a shocking nuance and thread of elegance in the 2010. There's a silky gripping palate presence and a driving detailed length that's stunning. Few wines transform with as much elegance and class in the cellar as Valdicava's. The 2010 promises to be one of the legends.

Valdicava is situated on the slopes of Montosoli, one of Montalcino’s most renowned areas. Montosoli is known for producing Brunellos of power, but also wines with aromatics that jump from the glass and plenty of lift. Their Riserva Madonna del Piano is sourced from the single vineyard of the same name and produced only in the very best vintages. It has long stood as one of the most aristocratic Brunellos.

The 2010 Madonna del Piano is a triumph. I'm very happy to offer this sharply priced parcel. The 2010 vintage in Brunello is one of the best of the past two decades. My advice is to jump on this.
