A Stand Out
2008 Castello di Verduno
Barolo Monvigliero Riserva
Just before the holiday madness hit, we tasted through 30+ samples and this was the stand out.
It offered so much for the money that I immediately jumped on it.
I was immediately enamoured by how pure and expressive the 2008 Monvigliero Riserva is. It's very much a young wine, but it's in a really good place right now.
I'm really fond of the 2008 vintage in Barolo. Along with 2001 and 2010, it forms the holy trinity of the best recent vintages. The vintage presents such clarity of terroir and elegance. Antonio Galloni captures all of this wonderfully when he writes: "The 2008s are highly transparent to site... this is a super-classic vintage that will thrill readers who like vibrant, refined Baroli."
Monvigliero is the top site of Verduno. In recent years, Castello di Verduno and Burlotto put the site on the map. It's a beautifully situated, south facing, clay and limestone site that sits at the northern-most limits of Barolo. The result is structured, elegant and aromatically vivid Barolos.
The 2008 Monvigliero Riserva possesses an impressive energy with lots of textural appeal. There's a beautiful combination of tension with dark and bright red fruits, herbs and spices.
I terms of combining value, sheer enjoyablity and seriousness, this is one of the most noteworthy Piedmont wines I've tasted. I bought all that I could, but it remains a small parcel. The sort of thing that you'd offer on a Sunday in January.
