A Star is Born:
2020 Lukas Hammelmann Riesling Roter Berg Grand Cru Dry

Posted by Joe Salamone

The incisive and forceful wines of the young Lukas Hammelmann are brilliant, even groundbreaking.

This is a brilliance that's difficult to capture. The question is how best to introduce this young talent. Almost inevitably, we reach for comparison.

Perhaps the wines of Schäfer-Fröhlich are the closest parallels due to their extreme angularity, their dazzling play of acidity, and minerality.

Hammelmann's 2020 Roter Berg is an incredible Grand Cru dry Riesling with all the subtlety of a thunderclap. It is the perfect place to begin.

This is a rapier-like Riesling, dense with zingy citrus notes. The silken midpalate is absolutely radiant. There is a soaring fragrant quality, matched by a delicate bitterness and a resinous herbal quality that turns saline in the never-ending mineral finish.

At as low as $50 a bottle on three-packs this is a great deal on a profound wine. This is a "GG" in depth, complexity, thrust, and balance; this is a wine that belongs on the table with the top dry Rieslings of the top growers in Germany.

Farming only a few hectares in the lower Pfalz, Hammelmann's wines flaunt a ruthless edge to them. These are among the most terroir-driven dry Rieslings we've tasted all year, a powerful testament to a new generation of growers who are shaping the next chapter of German wine.

This will not be the last time you hear of Lukas Hammelmann. His first vintage was only 2016 and yet, already, his wines are among the most talked about in Germany.
