A Study in Purity and Balance:
2017 De Montille Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Cailleret

Posted by Ian McFadden

De Montille's Puligny Cailleret may keep a low profile, but it's one of the most exciting bottles of white Burgundy that we taste each vintage.

This is an exhilarating, diamond cut, and tension-filled white Burgundy.

This is one of the wines that I like to put in people's hands. After tasting the wine, they inevitably write to me asking for multiple bottles.

The  2017 1er Cru Le Cailleret is a pristine expression of white Burgundy. It combines a stony intensity with incredible grace and precision. The wine boasts a quiet unfolding nuanced complexity that's fascinating. If I had to sum up the wine in only two words, they would be clarity and cut.

De Montille is famous for their long-lived wines. They are classics. Nothing is rushed; there appears to be little interest in exploiting youthful flash. The thread of purity and finesse continues to run through the wines. The 2017 Cailleret is a classic example of their style.

I've been incredibly impressed with the 2017 white Burgundies ever since they were released and I've been snapping them up aggressively. De Montille's Puligny 1er Cru Cailleret serves as a perfect summary of what makes the 2017s so special. It's a nearly perfectly proportioned wine of radiant finesse. This is a wine that shouldn't be missed.

Burghound: "Wood and strong sulfur aromas presently mask the underlying fruit. The tighter and more focused middle weight flavors flash even more minerality that adds a sense of lift to the sophisticated, classy, youthfully austere and built-to-age finish. This is excellent effort should be reasonably approachable young yet should easily reward up to a decade of cellaring."
