"Carillon is the reference standard for the appellation and this wine demonstrates why." -Allen Meadows

Carillon's wines may cruise somewhat under-the-radar, but there's no doubt that they are some of the most impeccably crafted white Burgundies.

That's why you find Carillon in the cellars of savvy Burg collectors right next to Leflaive, Coche, Lafon, and Ramonet.

What makes Carillon's wines so incredibly captivating is the way they combine regal grandeur with an almost fanatical rigor. The scale and complexity is just epic and yet, the proportions are so finely calibrated.

The pinnacle of the range is the ridiculously rare and pricey Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. Year after year, Carillon's 1er Cru Referts ranks just behind the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and yet, it can be had for a quarter of the cost.

I'm happy to offer Carillon's 2007 Puligny-Montachet 1er Cru Referts at $89.95 per bottle.

These are the only bottles in the U.S. Carillon is always rare, but the Referts is particularly so. Allocations typically given to top accounts are just six bottles. There are only eight or nine listings in the entire country for any vintage of Carillon's Referts.

2007 is a great White Burgundy vintage, so having even a modest quantity of Carillon's 2007 Referts is a coup. The White Burgundies from 07 are classically styled, a beautiful reflection of their underlying terroirs. There is an energy, a gripping tension to the wines.

John Gilman has described the 2007 White Burgundy vintage as "... simply the finest young white Burgundy vintage that I have tasted..."

This being Burgundy, a huge part of the story is location. Referts borders Meursault and Referts boasts some of the richness and depth that Meursault is famous for. But this is only half the story. What makes Referts so interesting is the way it tames the Meursault-like richness just enough to strut an intense focus and nimble finesse.

Of course, Carillon renders his Referts with an astounding purity. It's probably fair to call Carillon the master of Referts. His version is just brilliantly balanced, combining luscious yellow fruits with crushed rocks and zing-y citrus flavors.
