A Master at Work
2009 Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin
1er Cru Combe Aux Moines
One VERY SMALL Parcel!
"All I can say is buy these wines - you are going to love them!" -John Gilman, View from the Cellar
This is sage advice - Fourrier, frankly, nailed it in 2009.
Of course, saying that someone succeeded in the very, very good 2009 vintage isn't exactly a bold sentiment. But in Fourrier's case, his 09s really stand out.
In a vintage known for its ripeness, for plush dark fruits, Fourrier delivered something else: These are wines of bright, delineated fruit with terroir virtually screaming through the wines' incredible clarity.
If anything, the 09 vintage seems to have given Fourrier's wines a finesse and textural component (think pure silk) that's elevated the always elegant wines to a new level of style and length.
Today, we're focusing on Fourrier's 09 Combe Aux Moines, which is sourced from .87 hectares of vines that were planted in 1928.
This is one of the sweethearts of the collection and, to our mind, hits the perfect balance between quality and value.
The latter word being especially poignant as Fourrier is officially catapulted into the realm of blue-chip Burgundy producers. Prices for Fourrier's top two wines, the Griotte and Clos St. Jacques, have exploded... yet this is a deep and complex stable and there is plenty more behind the obvious blockbusters.
Fourrier's 09 Combe Aux Moines offers up Gevrey's earthy minerality along with its wildness and power that's presented in such detail, honesty and harmony that one is struck above all by the elegance. It offers an explosive array of red and dark cherry fruit, floral notes, minerals, earth and spice. (See below for Gilman's full note.)
Fourrier's Combe Aux Moines 09 shows a master at work. It's a wine of the vintage and yet, so sensitively rendered that it almost seems to transcend it.

John Gilman, View from the Cellar: "The 2009 Combe aux Moines is an absolute classic in the making. The bouquet is deep, pure and utterly refined, as it wafts from the glass in a blend of red and black cherries, grilled meat, Gevrey’s black minerality, woodsmoke, espresso, mustard seed and a touch of cedary wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and structured, with a fine core of fruit, ripe tannins, lovely acidity and excellent length and grip on the pure and fairly primary finish. A superb bottle."
