A superb wine in the making -
2012 Emrich-Schonleber Halenberg GG

Posted by Joe Salamone

Emrich-Schönleber is a master of dry Riesling.

At their best, they are laser beams of minerals, flowers and stone fruits.

The blue-slated Monzinger Halenberg is their top site. Their Grosses Gewächs for this site always boasts the most focus, the greatest elegance and the longest mineral-drenched finish.

As Gilman's full note below makes clear, the 2012 Halenberg GG is a beautiful, heartbreakingly rigorous example of this wine.

Emrich-Schönleber's 2012 thrives on a precision and a razor cut. Their tightly coiled style really blossoms with a handful of years of bottle age. We created 3-packs for this reason.

There's a growing consensus that 2012 is the best German vintage of the past decade. Time will tell, but for now the wines seem to grow more impressive every week.

Emrich-Schönleber's dry wines from the vintage are just gorgeous: they're beautifully balanced and clear as a crisp fall day. Stephen Tanzer's Joel Payne calls the Halenberg "one of the finer dry rieslings of the vintage on the Nahe."

Emrich-Schönleber has a huge reputation in Germany. These are some of the clearest expressions of Riesling around.

Each vintage, they produce some of the best dry wines in all of Germany. The 2004 Frühlingsplätzchen Spätlese Trocken was a formative bottle for many of us here. It was the bottle that opened our eyes to how good dry German Riesling could be and a benchmark by which we judge all others. The 2012 Halenberg GG is a perfect example of why we do.
