A "Sweet Spot" for Volnay Value
2010 Bouchard Volnay
1er Cru Clos des Chênes

We haven't been shy about offering Bouchard's 2010s lately. They're just that good, that value-laden.

Today, we reach the grand finale with a potent reminder that value in Burgundy still exists.

We'll talking about a 2010 1er Cru that clocks in at around $50. In this superb and very short vintage, you'll have no trouble finding Bourgogne Rouge for the same price and, gulp, higher.

And this is no basic run-of-the-mill 1er Cru. Volnay's 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is always considered one of the finest 1er Crus in Volnay aligning the signature finesse of the commune to a pure mineral line and a velvet-cloaked intensity.

Volnay is famous for its elegance, its linear fine-ness, its delicacy - this is one of our absolute favorite villages in Burgundy (home of Lafarge, Angerville) and the Clos des Chênes dramatizes what makes Volnay so special. Chênes is the convergence of Volnay's silken texture with power and elegance.

The 2010 vintage in Burgundy produced reds that are bright, vigorous and crystal clear in their transparency. For you Burgundy purists out there, we haven't seen a vintage this pure, this jewel-like in its vividness in a very long time.

Bouchard's 2010 1er Cru Clos des Chênes captures the freshness and the energy of the vintage wonderfully, along with the fine harmony that the vintage possesses. Burghound writes, "it's clear that there is excellent underlying material and the balance should enable this to age exceptionally well."

He goes on to place it squarely in the "Sweet Spot Outstanding" category.

Indeed. Bouchard's 2010 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is a strikingly suave Volnay offering up soaring aromatics, bright cherries and raspberries, minerals and floral high notes. All of this is wrapped around cashmere tannins.

Bouchard is an estate that has been on a serious streak - their standards are absolutely in-line with that of a small, artisanal, completely tuned-in domaine. You can taste it. They're producing the best wines they have in the past few decades.

Vintages this pure, this precise, and values this grand are rare. Our advice is to jump on this.
