"A top flight talent" - 2016 Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Champs Gains

Posted by Ian McFadden

Pillot stands as one of the most exciting and thoughtful winemakers in Burgundy.

His 2016 makes this clear. The collection combines the vintage's intensity with shimmering verve. The total package is really lovely.

The 2016s presents Pillot's signature of unmatched crystalline purity in a fascinating and very compelling way.

The 2016 Burgundy vintage saw frosts and greatly reduced yields. The resulting wines show a fascinating combination of concentration and presence with cool fruit tones, verve and crystal clear minerality. Pillot took the impact of the 2016 vintage and rendered wines with finely etched precision and vivid clarity.

Champs Gains sits directly to the east of Chassagne's Les Caillerets and, like that famous 1er Cru, is one of the best in the band that runs southeast from Puligny to Santenay. The soil is a shallow mix of clay and fragmented rock that receives ideal sun exposure as the slope faces southeast.

Pillot's Champs Gains always combines a regal presence with a buoying finesse. The 2016 possesses an incredible saturating punch with focus and clarity. The energy and bright citrus notes make for a really compelling wine.

A couple of years ago, Burghound commented that "Thierry Pillot is a top flight talent. If you haven’t tried the wines, you should.” This is only more true today. The 2016 Champs Gains is a really persuasive example of the high level that this domaine is working.
