Lafon's Santenots is one of the great wines of Volnay. In the hierarchy, it slides in just behind the best bottles from d'Angerville and Lafarge. Lafon's Santenots has an incredible aging potential - a recently opened bottle of 78 was stunning.
Santenots is one of Volnay's top 1er Crus and Lafon is king of the site. He has a magic touch with it. Clive Coates says Santenots has a "lush sensuality" to it and we should also emphasize its muscle. It's a masculine rendition of Volnay.
Lafon's touch with Santenots is how he takes its power and rich texture and renders a wine that walks on tiptoe with transparency, detail and stunning pulverized rock minerality.
The 09 Santenots is a reference point for his skill with this site. Galloni speaks about the wine's "breathtaking finesse and elegance. Impossibly silky on the palate, the Santenots impresses for its vivid texture, nuance and precise voice."
As I mentioned above, Lafon's Santenots really shines with time in the cellar. It ages both on its finely calibrated balance and on its sheer density. The 2009 will have no difficulty aging for fifteen plus years.
To return to Galloni's "this is a flat-out great wine" quote, Lafon's masterly skill is front and center in the 09 Santenots. This is definitely worth a look.
