Word is out on the 2010 vintage in Piedmont.

It's a stunning vintage. Unsurprisingly, Cascina delle Rose made the best wines that we've ever tasted from them.

We tasted the Cascina delle Rose's Barbaresco Rio Sordo a few weeks ago and were shocked by how pure and beautiful it was. The value on offer here is serious. This is a fairly new producer for us. We've tasted the last handful of vintages, but something special happened in 2010.

The excitement about the vintage is starting to reach a fevered pitch. We found this out a few weeks ago when we spent days responding to orders from our offer on Produttori's 2010 Barbaresco. This is probably a good time to say that Cascina delle Rose Rio Sordo is much more limited. These will go quickly.

From our tastings, all of this excitement seems warranted. 2010 is a beautifully classic and by all indications great vintage. The wines are so beautifully pure, balanced and fine.

The 2010 vintage played right into Cascina delle Rose's style. Theirs is an elegant, ultra-fine take on Barbaresco. And in 2010 it really all came together for them.

Cascina delle Rose is fairly new to bottling their wines. The estate was founded in 1948, but until 1992 they sold their grapes to a famous co-op in the region. This is an estate that's been under-the-radar for years, but their 2010s may put an end to this for good. When you factor in the pricing, the 2010 Rio Sordo will undoubtedly make a lasting impression.

Rio Sordo is one of the top sites in Barbaresco. It's a southwest facing vineyard with clay soils that's known for possessing a fair amount power and roundness married to flowers, earth and spice. Cascina delle Rose takes these qualities and frames them with delicacy and fine-ness.

We're always on the hunt for bottles that will improve greatly with 10-15 years in the cellar and can be had for under $50. Options seem to narrow each year. That's why tasting the Cascina delle Rose's 2010 Barbaresco Rio Sordo was so exciting.
