Aged Rioja Nobility - Lowest Price:
1973 López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia

Posted by Ian McFadden

For many of you this will sound trite, but it's worth repeating: Little about López de Heredia has changed in the 138 years since its founding.

There's no debate that if you want haunting, soulful and unyieldingly traditional Rioja, López de Heredia is the address to know.

The cocedero at López de Heredia

There are few wines in the world as heartbreaking in their subtle complexity and noble elegance as old López. They never stop captivating us.

We've tasted Lopez back to the 40s and what happens to these bottles with age is spellbinding. There's a level of nuance and complexity that few wines can compete with. Taste an old Lopez and there's little doubt of its noble breeding.

The 1973 Tondonia Gran Reserva is in a beautiful place right now. There's an incredibly complex spectrum on display - the nose explodes with spice, earth, minerals, hints of bright red fruits and smoke. On the palate there's an amazing poise and depth.

Lopez de Heredia is one of the treasures of a bygone era. To be able to offer an old example that's drinking so well and is so sharply priced is a pleasure.
