The 2010 Brunello vintage hardly needs an introduction. It's certainly an extraordinary vintage that will be remembered for decades. While so many of the heralded vintages are straight-up blockbusters of power, 2010 is different. The headliner with 2010 is purity, clarity of expression in the most detailed fashion. There's plenty of concentration, for sure, but it's the total package of length, finesse, structure and pristine freshness that make the vintage especially noteworthy.
The short version is that 2010 delivers what I love most about Brunello. For me, Brunello is about aromatics. This is something that Il Poggione excels at, and the 2010 delivers Sangiovese Grosso's aromatics in an absolutely beguiling fashion.
The 2010 Il Poggione Brunello gets straight to the beating heart of Brunello. Think of wildly complex aromatics of roses, spice, incense, earth, minerals and game. All of this is cast against a backdrop of raw power and refined tannins. Simply put, this is an impressive wine.
Il Poggione is an estate that's been making spectacular traditional Brunellos for well over fifty years. The style has always been centered around a powerful, richly layered expression of Brunello married to beautifully detailed aromatics, soil tones and magnificent regal grandeur.
Still, recent vintages have seen Il Poggione's wines hit an even higher level. They've broken into the ranks of Brunello's best. The 2010 catches quality in full stride. At this price, I suggest that you stock up.
