An Essential:
2023 Fornerol Côte de Nuits-Villages Rouge

Posted by Ian McFadden

Didier Fornerol's Côte de Nuits-Village has become a pillar of our red Burgundy program.

Sadly, Fornerol announced his retirement after the 2024 vintage. Including today's offer, there are only a couple of vintages of his time-capsule Burgundies left.

These are wines that excel at gracefulness and terroir-soaked lightness. They are wines that clearly announce themselves as old school.

I have a soft spot for Côte de Nuits, mostly due to Bachelet's wines, but also a new generation of producers, like Camille Thiriet and Jérôme Galeyrand. Didier Fornerol takes Côte de Nuits to a level of class that I thought was impossible.

Fornerol's 2023 is a silken powerhouse with plenty of earthiness and minerality. It pulls off the feat of being outrageously gulpable while boasting incredible refinement and detail. The combination of complexity, concentration, and terroir-inflected harmony is really impressive.

Didier Fornerol was the vineyard manager and cellar master at Domaine de L’Arlot from 1982 until 1998. In 1999, he returned to his family's domaine. Today, he has fine-tuned the winemaking at the domaine with crucial help from L'Arlot's legendary Jean-Pierre de Smet. Given how much we've loved many of the older L'Arlot wines, it's no surprise that Fornerol is so important to us.

These are red Burgundies that we dearly miss. We suggest that you stock up while you can.
