An Indescribable Dose of Magic:
2014 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Spätlese Alte Reben Auction

Posted by Joe Salamone

We wanted to kick off Rieslingfeier weekend with something big.

This is the first thing that came to mind. It simply doesn't get much better than Egon Müller's Auction bottlings.

As great as Müller's normal bottlings are, our experience with Müller's Auction bottlings has convinced us that they exist on an even higher plane. Yes, they're rare, and expensive. With that said, these are some of the greatest wines in the world. For the few who know them well, they are legendary.

Auction bottles are not to be confused with their lesser siblings - these are special barrels, selected by the estate to be auctioned off at the annual VDP auction in Trier.

Even in that rarefied context, Egon Müller has a long history of bringing absolutely killer selections to the auction. The easiest way to think of it is to picture the best attributes of the normal bottlings consolidated, amplified and given an indescribable dose of magic.

Egon Müller didn't bring any Kabinett to Auction in 2014 and that turned an incredible amount of attention to the Spätlese. Because of this, we saw much less 2014 Spätlese Auction than we've seen in the past. This is sad. Speak to anyone who's tasted it and they'll tell you that it's an absolutely amazing bottle, combining delicacy, intensity and verve in an utterly miraculous way.

Muller's 2014s are some of the greatest examples of the vintage. The wines combine 2014's density and high acidity into a harmonious and profoundly dynamic whole. Expect all the energy, tension and detail that make Müller so thrilling and add a gripping palate presence, pulsating with cool fruits, minerals and herbs.

Every time that we taste a Müller, we're reminded of their singular magic. It's that combination of incredible weightless fine-ness coupled with such depth and magnitude. A Müller seemed like the perfect bottle to feature as we head into Rieslingfeier weekend. At the event, year after year and amidst an embarrassment of riches, it's Müller wines that stand out. Not trying to take any half-measures, we reached immediately for the best among the recent releases.
