Angerville Ducs: "Nothing short of remarkable"

"...nothing short of remarkable..."
2007 Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs

"The d'Angerville '07s are flat out terrific wines, from the bottom to the top of the range and I highly recommend them to you." -Burghound

Angerville's 2.4-hectare monopole Clos des Ducs is one of Volnay's greatest wines - only Lafarge's Clos des Chênes can stand with it at the highest echelon of Volnay. This is also a wine we're absolutely obsessed with, a wine we've been passionate about for some years.

Few Burgundies at this price-point can match the depth or monumentality of Angerville's Clos des Ducs. Angerville's Ducs has all the focus and delineation of Volnay (especially in 2007), yet it is built like a fortress. This is a wine that will be able to slumber for well over a decade... and wake up fighting.

If there is any doubt as to the quality of Angerville's 2007s, we'll simply quote the Burghound: "The d'Angerville '07s are flat out terrific wines, from the bottom to the top of the range and I highly recommend them to you." He gives the Clos des Ducs his coveted "Don't miss! Outstanding!" along with a score that puts to shame a good many bottles at twice and thrice the price.

Volnay did especially well in 2007, a very small, very important detail when considering the vintage. The wines have gorgeous fruit, really evocative and floral, yet, if there is one thing that makes the 2007 Volnays special it's their delicacy, their tenderness. Believe me, the Ducs is a structured, muscular wine, yet the muscle, the polished core of mineral is somehow supple, energetic.

When you consider that the 2005 Ducs currently trades at $250+ and we're able to bring the 2007 to you today at well under $100, well... the value becomes even more obvious. (When this parcel dries up, so does this price, so be warned.)

Guillaume d'Angerville uses a phrase we like a lot in describing the 2007s: "They are very Volnay in character." After all the hoopla, all the scores and facts and figures and talk of ripeness and balance, what's more important than the very identity of the wine? (Answer: Nothing.)

Angerville is one of the oldest, grandest names in red Burgundy. The legendary Jacques Angerville began domaine bottling early in the 20th century along with luminaries Armand Rousseau and Henri Gouges. Currently, his son Guillaume runs the show and little has changed since the father passed away. They have some of the greatest terroirs in Volnay and they make some of the best wine in Volnay. It's that simple.

Burghound: This too is mildly reduced, making the nose difficult to accurately read though the lacy, pure and laser-like precision and focus of the medium weight flavors is nothing short of remarkable and here the emphasis on a base of stone is perhaps even more pronounced than in the Taillepieds, all wrapped in a harmonious, understated yet driving finish that does not seem to stop for several minutes. This is a not a big Ducster but for purity of delivery, it's hard to beat and the balance is impeccable.
