Angerville LARGE-FORMAT: Burg Rarities

Volnay Blows Up:
Magnums and Double-Magnums
Angerville Volnay 1er Clos des Ducs
A Small Parcel of BIG Bottles

If it's a weakness then it's a weakness many of you share with us.

There is just something awesome about large-format bottles.

Yes, they are rarer than 750mls and they preserve the wine contained within for longer times (which is why a wine that's dead in 750ml will still taste young in mag or double-mag), but beyond all these rather tangible factoids, the fact of the matter is there is just something cool about their very presence... the larger-than-bottle footprint.

Today's offer includes a rare collection of Angerville's top bottling, the probably-should-be-Grand-Cru Clos des Ducs in magnum and double-magnum, from 2007, 2008 and 2009.

This offer is short and sweet because if you're one of the few people getting this email, you know Angerville and you know how great the elite Ducs is.

Angerville's wines are both the strongest, the most muscular of Volnay, as well as some of the most elegant and mineral. It's a thrilling combination. The trio of vintages in today's offer are at once, individualistic, terroir-driven and honest.

But they are very different.

2007 as we've written today, in reference to Bachelet's great wines, is perhaps the most misunderstood vintage of the last decade. Do not underestimate! Writes the Burghound: "The d'Angerville '07s are flat out terrific wines, from the bottom to the top of the range and I highly recommend them to you." The fact of the matter is a number of collections from this vintage are spectacular: Bachelet, Mugneret-Gibourg and Angerville are top among them. While Angerville's 07 Ducs will not make old bones, still, give it 5 years and then enjoy over the next decade or longer. And as the vintage is so underestimated, this wine is a steal.

2008 was a purist's vintage, a year of grace and poise. The wines are direct, and display tightly coiled definition. The Ducs especially is direct and defined and can have almost forceful mineral spine. The vintage is one where the terroir of each and every wine is front and center.

2009 was a vintage of unparalleled density, lush ripe midpalates made suave with firm yet polished tannins... The 09 Ducs will drink young, will drink in mid-age and will make old bones. This is an epic wine with the Burghound writing that the 09 Angervilles "are competitive, if not superior, to their brilliant '05's."

Few Burgundies at this price-point, in these formats, can match the depth or monumentality of Angerville's Clos des Ducs. Maybe none get close to the value on offer today.
