"Another Outstanding Collection"
2015 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Liebenberg Smaragd

Posted by Joe Salamone

"Lucas Pichler has produced another outstanding collection... My favorite is the Grüner Veltliner Liebenberg."

- Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate

Liebenberg shows a compelling and fascinating side of Pichler's style.

While Pichler's style is bold and attention-grabbing, the cool Liebenberg site drives home the rigor that exists below the muscle and gloss. It's all about a deep current of minerality and high toned citrus and floral notes. The 2015 is gorgeous.

The first vintage for Pichler's Grüner Liebenberg was 2010. The combination of the strength of the 2015 vintage and Pichler's gaining an understanding of the vineyard produced the most brilliant example of Liebenberg to date.

The majority of Pichler's vines in Liebenberg are 70 to 80 years old and situated on steep terraces. It's an absolutely choice section of the vineyard.

The 2015 vintage in Austria produced shimmering, pure wines with layered fruit and firm, vibrant and detailed mineral cores. It's a really beautiful combination and it's clear why 2015 is already being called one of the top vintages of the past twenty years.

The 2015 Liebenberg exploits the purity of the vintage, boasting an emphatic salty mineral spine and beautiful clarity of expression. There's a sleek elegance that's really lovely.

Our last 2015 Pichler offer blew up and left us scrambling for additional quantities. We're sneaking this in on a Sunday because quantities are extremely limited. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.

Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Dürnsteiner Liebenberg comes from 70- to 80-year-old vines on a rare calcareous slate soil. The wine displays a very clear and pure, pretty open and lovely spicy, crystalline and flinty bouquet with ripe pip fruit aromas. Very distinguished and rather coolish in its expression. Full-bodied, round and elegant, with tension, salt and grip in the finish, this is a charmingly ripe and juicy but also challenging mineral and piquant Veltliner from one of the most exciting terroirs. The finish is powerful and complex but also fresh and stimulatingly piquant. Pichler has bottled this wine since 2010."
