Another Side of Dönnhoff:
2020 Dönnhoff Weissburgunder & Grauburgunder Doppelstück

"Pure and salty on the palate, this is a dense, quite complex and persistently salty and mineral cuvée" - Stephan Reinhardt

For the past few decades, Dönnhoff's Rieslings have been instrumental in establishing German Riesling's place on the world stage. If I had to sum up Dönnhoff's style briefly, I'd say that the wines have a gorgeous polish, beautiful proportions, and a sense of weightless elegance.

However, there's considerably more to Dönnhoff than Riesling. A sizable 20% of the estate is planted with Burgundy varietals, like Weissbergunder and Grauburgunder.

Today, we're happy to pay tribute to this side of Dönnhoff with their 2020 Weissburgunder & Grauburgunder Doppelstück.

Dönnhoff's Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder Doppelstück comes from Oberhäuser Felsenberg, a cooler site with volcanic soils. The two grapes are harvested, pressed, and fermented together. Doppelstück is a reference to the extremely large barrel that the wine is aged in. The traditional barrels of the Nahe are 1,200-liter vessels called stück. A doppelstück is the extra-large size (2,400-liters.)

The wine is all about mineral sheen, poise, and a sneaky building depth. There's a lovely tightly coiled verve and saline quality. It also delivers some serious finesse. The profile is very much defined by its structure, stoniness, and class.

Over the past five years, the German wine scene in the States has become richer and more complicated. Today, the story of German wine clearly goes well beyond the Riesling grape. I'm happy to offer a really compelling example of Germany beyond Riesling from one of the country's modern-day benchmarks.

Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "From the Oberhäuser Felsenberg (porphyry, melaphyre), the 2020 Weissburgunder & Grauburgunder Doppelstück is blended with the grapes that are picked and pressed together. The bouquet is beautifully aromatic, fresh and coolish on the elegant and flinty nose. Pure and salty on the palate, this is a dense, quite complex and persistently salty and mineral cuvée with a tensioned and persistent finish. Impressive! 12.5% alcohol"
