At The Height of His Powers - Grüner Edition:
2015 Prager Grüner Veltliner Achleiten Smaragd

Posted by Joe Salamone

Prager is one of the legendary Austrian producers. They've released no shortage of great wines. Still, the 2015s stand out.

This is especially true of the Grüners. They have amazing cut and precision.

The Achleiten vineyard is one of Austria's best sites. Achleiten is prized for its mineral intensity and delineated length. If you're looking for a Wachau site that screams terroir, it's Achleiten - especially Prager’s version where the site assumes a staining, pure and detailed mineral presence.

In 2015, Prager's Achleiten is an absolutely glorious example of this site. The Wine Advocate's Stephan Reinhardt calls Prager's two Achleiten Grüner bottlings from 2015 "the finest Achleiten Veltliners I have ever tasted." We offered the Achleiten Stockkultur a month ago and today turn to the regular Achleiten bottling.

The 2015 vintage in Austria produced shimmering, pure wines with layered fruit and firm, vibrant and detailed mineral cores. It's a really beautiful combination and it's clear why 2015 is already being called one of the top vintages of the past decade.

This is an exceptional vintage for Prager. I'm very happy to offer Prager's 2015 Achleiten. I should warn you that the majority of our 2015 Austrian offers have sold out. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.

2015 Prager Grüner Veltliner Achleiten

Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "The deep and elegant, intensely colored 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten offers both a perfectly ripe fruit along with herbal and floral flavors and crushed gneiss. Full-bodied, round, intense and highly elegant, this is a concentrated and powerful Veltliner with a dense and intense fruit. You can drink it now, but this would be a waste of talent. This is a spectacular wine with a piquant acidity and a very ripe and intense, but still precise, fruit and a dominating mineral bass line. The wine has a very good tannin grip, too."
