At The Tipping Point
2008 Ganevat: Chardonnay
Florine & Grands Teppes
Only Bottles in U.S.

Last month's 2007 Ganevat offer sold out in a flash. Today, we turn to Ganevat's 2008 Chardonnays.

I'm going to keep this fairly short, because honestly the process of allocating the 2007 was agonizing.

In the 2007 email, I had written "Jean-François Ganevat has finally reached the tipping point." Apparently, I was way off on just how far his reputation has spread.

Quantities are limited - this offer is only going out to people who've supported Ganevat and chances are it will sell out quickly.

I can't tell you how many somms, collectors, etc. have come up to me saying that a bottle of Ganevat was the best wine they've had in a long time.

If Overnoy/Houillon have become entrenched and hunted down in wine geek circles, Ganevat seems to be attracting a more diverse circle of fans, from wine geeks to long-time Burgundy collectors.

Ganevat's wines can startle in terms of purity, concentration, detail and mineral expression. At their best, they're awe-inspiring. 2008 is one of my favorite vintages for Ganevat's whites, right there with 2004 (2010 seems very promising as well.)

Ganevat's 2008s have a near perfect balance of concentration, clarity and verve. Time in bottle has only reinforced our opinion of the vintage.

Today, we focus on two Chardonnays: Florine and Grands Teppes VV.

Florine is more sleekly floral with underlying minerality and shows best in its youth. It comes from youngish vines on limestone. Grands Teppes is from white marl and is a monumental wine from 90-year-old vines. A wine of depth and power, Grands Teppes leads with stone fruits and sweet herbs that are animated by moss-strewn notes, layered minerals and a marmalade of various citrus fruits.

Ganevat is a true force who has pulled out all the stops in his pursuit of quality. If he's starting to blow up, it's very much well earned. He's taken Jura Chardonnay to a previously unimaginable level.

As we mentioned earlier, quantities are limited. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
