When it comes to Meursault, Lafon has few peers.
For comparisons, you'd have to look towards the wines of Roulot and Coche-Dury.
In recent vintages, the wines have simply been breathtakingly good. Lafon's 2018s highlight the level that the domaine is working.
As is often the case, the 1er Cru Charmes represents a high point of the collection. Along with Genevrières and Perrières, Charmes is one of Meursault's great sites. Lafon's Charmes is the benchmark.
Lafon is lucky enough to have very well-situated vines in Charmes. They are just below the villages greatest 1er Cru, Les Perrières. What makes Lafon's Charmes stand out among its peers is its grandeur and rigor. Charmes is a site that can get a little plump, but Lafon's is always sculpted and tension-filled.
When it comes to riper vintages, Lafon's Charmes often amazes. This is certainly the case with the 2018. It's finely etched, has a classy length, and lots of verve.
This is a very compelling snapshot of a white Burgundy benchmark. Over the past six months, we've drunk many bottles of Lafon. It's clear that Lafon is at the height of his powers. The 2018 Charmes is another example of Lafon in top form.
