Austrian Rarities: Part II
2007 Alzinger Riesling Smaragds
Hohereck - Loibenberg - Liebenberg

Last week we offered out a small parcel of 2006 Alzinger Riesling Hohereck Smaragd.

Today we present the grand (petite) finale.

A pristine little assortment of the grandest, most mineral and delicate and meditative wines from Austria, and indeed the world, from the superb 2007 vintage.

As time has gone on, the 2007 vintage in Austria, quiet on release and in the shadows of the mighty 2006s, has developed into one of the most impressive vintages of the decade. Obviously it's hard to predict at this still early stage, but when we look back in a few more years, I think it's likely that 2001 and 2007 will take top honors for the decade.

The 2007 Austrians - and especially the haunting 2007 Alzingers - just have spectacular balance.

If you've read almost anything I've written over the past five or so years, than you know the deep, deep respect I have for this estate. These are the "Saar Valley Rieslings" of Austria, somehow combining profound aromatics of flowers and herbs and minerals and layers of bright citrus, all on a delicate, petite, crystalline frame.

Little porcelain Riesling sculptures. That you can drink.

I know there is a pretty serious group of Alzinger fanatics out there - last week's offer sold out in record time, so I'll keep it short. Three wines are on offer, all of them 2007 Riesling Smaragds from top sites: The rare Hohereck, the grand Loibenberg and the whispering Liebenberg.

The pricing is extraordinary - two of the wines are too rare and not even available in the U.S. (the Hohereck and Liebenberg) and as for the grand Loibenberg, the only pricing in the U.S. is as much as $10 more.

Please give us your maximum order and we'll do the best we can - all orders subject to confirmation and balanced orders are appreciated!

This note is from Schildknecht. The Loibenberg is one of Alzingers top sites - this is for sure the most exuberant, perfumed, extroverted wines of Alzinger. Writes Schildknecht: "The Alzinger 2007 Riesling Smaragd Loibenberg smells alluringly of buddleia, wisteria, white peach and fresh lime. Lusciously fruity, refreshing, and exuding extract sweetness, yet under girded by a sense of density, this remarkably-balanced Riesling finishes with dramatic persistence of floral perfume, crushed stone, and mysteriously savory salinity that seem to well up out of the oceanic blue. Marvel at it over the next 8-10 years."
