Maybe the name – “Mineral” – tells you everything you need to know.
For years we've highlighted three wines as the absolute top values in world-class dry Riesling: Keller's "von der Fels," Lauer's "Senior", and today's "Mineral."
All three wines present the same narrative: Grand Cru pedigree, top sites, and old vines. The equation is direct, the value obvious: 80-90% of the raw material at 50% of the price. With Keller’s “von der Fels” now all but an allocated rarity (with a price pushing well past $50 in many cases), perhaps it’s time to admit there are only two left standing.
Today we offer one of the last titans of dry Riesling value: Emrich-Schönleber’s 2021 “Mineral” at as low as $30.95 in six packs.
Compared to the other two bottlings, the “Mineral” is the most cut, it is the most unapologetically "Mineral” – especially in the electric 2021 vintage.
With harvest times in October, much of 2021 reminds the seasoned taster of the great vintages of the 1990s. The 2021 is an absolutely brilliant, chiseled dry Riesling of just jaw-dropping clarity and structure. Due to low yields, it also has a serious density and grip that will power this wine through a decade.
Emrich-Schönleber has long been celebrated as one of the greatest estates of Germany. In the cooler parts of the upper Nahe, they are for us, one of the three unrivaled masters of dry Riesling, along with Keller and Schäfer-Fröhlich.
Emrich-Schönleber's wines have never been that easy to find in the U.S. This is our only drop of this wine and it will disappear quickly.
