Maybe the name – “Mineral” – tells you everything you need to know.
For years we've highlighted a near-sacred trilogy – the three absolute top values in world-class dry Riesling: Keller's "von der Fels," Lauer's "Senior", and today's "Mineral."
All three wines present the same narrative: Grand Cru pedigree, top sites, and old vines.
The equation is direct, and the value is obvious: 80-90% of the raw material at 50% of the price. With Keller’s “von der Fels” now being a tightly allocated rarity, we are basically left with only "Mineral" and "Senior".
Compared to the other two bottlings, the “Mineral” is the most cut, it is the most unapologetically "Mineral,” although in the buoyant 2022 vintage, the wine has an added dimension. This year's edition is ultra-finessed, exuberant, and expansive with cool-toned fruit.
The extreme dryness of 2022 shut down much of the growing season; the vines just pressed “pause” for a few weeks. And so we have from this vintage, despite the sun and heat, extremely light, feather-weight wines that are clear and vibrant, with saturating minerality and fruit.
This is a joyous vintage of maximum refreshment. Emrich-Schönleber, without a doubt, produced one of the dry-wine stars of this vintage with “Mineral.”
Emrich-Schönleber has long been celebrated as one of the greatest estates of Germany. In the cooler parts of the upper Nahe, they are for us, one of the three unrivaled masters of dry Riesling, along with Keller and Schäfer-Fröhlich.
Emrich-Schönleber's wines have never been that easy to find in the U.S. This is our only drop of this wine and it will disappear quickly.
