Burgundy Elite
2010 Bachelet Bourgogne Aligoté

Our love of Denis Bachelet has been well documented here. The reason is simple: everything he touches is elevated far beyond expectations.

Bachelet's Bourgogne Rouge can compete with many producers' village level wines. His Charmes-Chambertin, from a second or third tier Grand Cru, is one of the great wines of Burgundy and hunted down (and priced) accordingly.

Bachelet's line-up over-achieves top-to-bottom. Bachelet is a master of his craft. It's that simple.

Out of Bachelet's entire line-up, the Aligoté is the wine for the warm months. However, well beyond being an antidote to the heat, this is one of the greatest white wine values I've seen this year. It's in stock and ready for summer sipping and beyond.

To be blunt, Aligoté is typically not a grape to write home about. It's lean, fairly neutral with a lemon-y kick. Unsurprisingly, in Bachelet's hands, it becomes something to talk about and even get excited about. There's an extra dimension to Bachelet's Aligoté that makes it transcend the category.

There are three or four Aligotés around that reach this level. The names will be familiar - they're among the best producers in all of Burgundy (Coche-Dury, Leroy's Domaine d'Auvenay and Roulot).

Recently, Bachelet's Aligoté came up in conversation with a sommelier. He said that it was one of the most shocking wines he's tasted in a long time, because it so exceeded his expectations.

Against the common backdrop of zippy acidity, Bachelet's 2010 Aligoté ratchets up the complexity and palate presence delivering notes of grapefruit, smoke, and salty minerality. The stunning 2010 vintage gave Bachelet's Aligoté an even higher level of dynamism.

Bachelet's 2010 Aligoté is something to have on hand in quantity. It's perfect as an aperitif, as a cocktail wine and with light fish and poultry dishes.

Above all, this is a deal that we rarely see. I wish it were not the case, but we're pressed to find sub-$20 wines that really over-deliver. Today, we have a wine that hits the bull's-eye. We suggest that you stock up.
