Back Up The Truck - Portugal Edition:
2021 Antonio Madeira Tinto Dao

Posted by Joe Salamone

This is simply an incredibly delicious wine.

On both occasions that we tried this wine, the entire staff was taken by the bottle.

We're not alone. The Wine Advocate's Luiz Gutiérrez writes "I fell in love with it immediately."

At as low as $20.95, the value that the Tinto Dao offers is remarkable, so much so that it demanded to be a Back Up The Truck offer.

Clocking in at 12.5 alcohol, there are a lot of elements in this wine that harken back to Beaujolais from twenty years ago or more. They share a drinkability along with a rush of bright fruit and bouncy acidity.

This is no accident. Antonio Madeira includes Jules Chauvet, the mentor to Beaujolais' Gang of Four, as one of the people who inspires his winemaking. Like the Gang of Four, Madeira uses minimal sulphur to create silky, transparent, pure, and very expressive wines.

Antonio Madeira was born in Paris. His family left Portugal during the Salazar dictatorship.  Madeira eventually returned to Portugal to focus on winemaking in Dao, home to granite soils and old vines. The Dao Tinto is comprised of 20 different grape varieties and is sourced from organic vineyards.

There's much more that can be said about this wine, but it's probably better to wrap this up. This is an irresistible wine and a serious value.

Title

Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate: "The entry-level red 2021 Tinto has a beautiful, floral, perfumed and clean nose. I fell in love with it immediately. It's a blend of purchased grapes, and the wine was produced with exactly the same methods and care as the domaine wines. He tries to convince growers not to use any chemicals in the vineyard, but it's difficult to convince all. It's 80% new vines from the four dominant grapes in Däo (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro Preto and Jaen) and 20% old vines with mixed varieties. It has 12.5% alcohol and a medium-bodied palate and is juicy and tasty, light and fresh, clean, precise and primary, with flavors of acid berries and a long, dry finish. This has purity and is a great value. He produced some 11,000 bottles, and it will grow up to 30,000 bottles in future years."
