On paper, Côtes du Rhône is supposed to be one of the "value" categories of wine. Our experience with the wines often results in disappointment. Many Côtes du Rhône wines lack structure and interest, and show the warmth of alcohol.

For many years, Franck Balthazar's Côtes du Rhône has been our go-to. Along with Chave's Mon Coeur, it has always served as one of the benchmarks of the category.
However, when we tasted the 2024 vintage, it jumped out at us. It was so good that it clearly needed a wider stage than just placing it on the shelf in the retail store.
The 2024 Côtes du Rhône is extraordinarily bright and fresh with nice depth and structure. At as low as $20 per bottle, this is a serious bargain. Few wines come close to competing with the value on offer.
We've been closely following Balthazar's wines since shortly after Franck took over his family's domaine. Balthazar is currently producing some of our favorite examples of Cornas. Across the range, the wines are pure and nicely judged. The clarity of expression makes clear the sensitive winemaking and dedicated farming at the domaine.
Balthazar sources the grapes for his Côtes du Rhône from a friend in the southern Rhône. Unsurprisingly, Syrah makes up 60% of the blend, with Grenache making up the remainder. Balthazar's Côtes du Rhône always hits a beautiful balance between concentrated texture, definition, and vivacity. The 2024 flaunts these qualities.
It will be quite some time before we're able to offer a wine of this quality for this price. I suggest that you stock up.
