Chalone Vineyard's 2010 Estate Chardonnay Limited Release stands out for its freshness, its intensity and judicious use of oak (a Crush essential). It drinks like a wine that is double the price, for real.
California Chardonnay has a reputation for oakiness that can come across as heavy and fatiguing. The Chalone Vineyard Estate Chardonnay Limited Release is far removed from this style of Chardonnay. It's a California white with an impressive amount of drive and power. After opening a bottle for the staff, everyone had a look of shock due to the restraint and breed that was apparent.
A large part of the story is terroir. The Chalone AVA is an extreme place with a rich history of producing some of the best Chardonnays in California. The soil is limestone, the same soil that runs through Burgundy. The temperature can vary from 90 degrees during the day to 50 degrees at night. This develops a crazy amount of tension between power and ripeness and vibrant acidity.
2010 is, by all accounts, a special vintage in California. It was a vintage that showed a gorgeous amount of freshness, balance and concentration. The 2010 Estate Limited Release offers a beautiful mélange of citrus and stone fruit, yet the real magic here is in the proportions, balance and the polished yet refreshing acidity.
