Back Up the Truck - $10 Bordeaux
2014 Château Carbonneau Classique
The Value of the Year?
We're constantly searching for value Bordeaux. It's no easy task.
Three or five years can go by before we find something that truly merits attention.
Today, we're really happy to present what's easily one of our best finds in the past five years. We're comfortable going a bit further and saying that Carbonneau's Classique offers the best value of anything we've tasted this year.
This is the kind of bottle you should have on hand in quantity. It works exceptionally well as a cocktail wine and can be paired with a wide range of meat dishes from leg of lamb to roast chicken. For this reason, we've gone right to case pricing.
Gently priced Bordeaux is one of our most requested items. There's good reason for this. There was a point when Bordeaux provided people with food-friendly and affordable wines. Sadly, finding these sorts of wines has become extremely difficult. So many of the wines are either too expensive or just seem industrially made and innocuous. That's what makes Carbonneau so exciting. It's a small family run estate. We sat down to taste with the current owner, Wilfrid Franc de Ferrière and his son, and it's clear that this is a heartfelt estate.
Carbonneau's Classique delivers deep, fairly powerful classic Bordeaux flavors of cassis, crushed leaves and minerals with round tannins and a fresh finish. In the end, there's an easy to drink, joyous quality to the wine that makes it irresistible.
Carbonneau is in Sainte Foy Bordeaux, an appellation that's part of Côtes de Bordeaux. Its off-the-beaten-path status definitely contributes to the outrageous value that it offers. Equally important is the clay and limestone soils of the region that endow the wine with an astonishing amount of elegance and fine structure.
This impression of finesse is accentuated by the 2014 vintage. At the end of the day, the 2014 vintage in Bordeaux produced classically structured wines with a beautiful layer of expressive red fruit.
Deals like this come very rarely and when they do, they tend to disappear quickly. We strongly suggest that you consider picking up a case. If you happen not to finish it over this winter, the wine will come in handy for steaks on the grill during the summer.
