Simply put, 2014 is one of the most exciting young white Burgundy vintages that we've tasted.
It's the total package. There's classicism, verve and mineral clarity along with a crazy amount of concentration and presence.
I've been searching for an overachieving bottle that delivered serious quality for the price. It was a long search, but I found it in Pillot's Bourgogne Blanc.
It's no surprise that it was Pillot who delivered what we were after. Pillot stands as one of the most exciting and thoughtful winemakers of Burgundy’s new generation. Burghound has said of Thierry Pillot: "It’s becoming clear that Thierry Pillot is a top flight talent. If you haven’t tried the wines, you should.”
In short, this is a case where the domaine is beginning to make major waves, but pricing still hasn’t caught up to the quality.
As is often the case, it's how good the entire range is that really drives home the incredibly high level of winemaking at Pillot. The Bourgogne Blanc dazzles in ways that few other wines in the category do, and certainly not at this price point.
Pillot's 2014 Bourgogne Blanc is a wine of unmatched tension, purity and depth of complexity. Here you have brilliant focus and surprising class as the wine delivers orchard fruits and high-toned citrus wrapped around a smoke inflected, stony mineral core.
It's rare that I come across white Burgundies this impressive at this price. I took every bottle that I could get my hands on. Still, given the excitement over the 2014 white Burgundy vintage, I expect this to disappear quickly.
