Elegance Over Power
Back-Vintage Francois Bertheau
Bonnes-Mares, Amoureuses and Charmes. 1986-1993
"A gifted winemaker of the old school." -Kermit Lynch
Today's offer hits a very rare trifecta: mature red Burgundy from great sites at gentle pricing.
Bertheau is an estate we've come to be a bit obsessed with in the last few months - we bought a little parcel of 2010s and they basically sold out just by being online. Apparently we're not the only ones obsessed.
The style here is defined by purity, finesse and with the silken quality that only Chambolle can achieve.
Bertheau falls within the stylistic spectrum of producers like Jean-Marie Fourrier and Jacky Truchot, wines that favor grace over power, wines that speak softly, but with captivating precision.
At this point Bertheau is not widely known (and prices for his current and back vintages reflect this) but these days seem numbered.
This isn't that surprising when you think about it. To begin with, Bertheau has holdings in some of Chambolle's best sites. He has .34 hectares in Bonnes Mare, a Grand Cru capable of producing monumentally complex and long-lived wines with few rivals in all of Burgundy. Bertheau also has the 1er Cru Amoureuses, which produces wines with such class that it's considered a Grand Cru in all but name. Finally, his Charmes offers slightly richer textures and more immediate pleasure while maintaining Chambolle's heartbreaking elegance.
What's striking about Bertheau's wines is that they age not on density, but on balance and structural harmony. Wines like this are things of beauty...
...and beauty is fleeting, as are quantities. Please give us your full request and we'll do our best.
