Back-Vintage Chave:
1998 Hermitage Rouge

Posted by Ian McFadden

In the northern Rhône, the 1998 stands as one of the greatest vintages of the past three decades.

I'm very excited to offer Chave's formidable monument to this great vintage.

I've tasted the 1998 Hermitage Rouge often for nearly twenty years and it's consistently been an absolutely jaw-dropping bottle and one that, while showing well today, will age majestically.

The Chave family is Rhone Royalty. They produce some of the greatest expressions of Syrah in the world—no one coaxes more intensity, complexity, or refinement from the grape. The Chave family has been in the Rhone Valley since 1481 and the current head of the domaine, Jean-Louis Chave, represents the 16th generation of an unbroken lineage of winemakers.

The 1998 possesses an architecture and refinement that it only shares with the world's top wines. The scale that it works on is epic. It offers breeding and dazzling elegance. When vintages like 1998 reach maturity, look out. They offer crazy finesse with kaleidoscopic aromatics and mysterious depth.

There’s simply no better expression of Syrah on the planet. The 1998 is another compelling testimony to this.
