Saarburger Rausch Auslese
Only Bottles in the U.S.
In 1993, Hanno Zilliken produced some of his finest wines in over three decades.
Today, we focus on well-stored bottles of Zilliken's Saarburger Rausch 93 Auslese.
The pricing is one of those moments in the wine market that causes head-scratching. Since we have a limited amount of bottles, it's probably best not to think about it too much and just jump on it. This very well may be the last we'll see of Zilliken's great 93s.
At Zilliken, everything is energized, dazzling, all the wines walk around on tip toes. They are buoyant wines.
The 93 vintage delivered an astounding purity of fruit to Zilliken's Auslese. These are Saar Rieslings in their most glorious form, which is to say bright, transparent, nimble, finessed and filigreed.
Years ago, Rudi Weist, Zilliken's importer, commented that 1993 was, "such a superb vintage that it will rival 1990 and in some cases exceed its quality." Weist also wrote that in 1993, Zilliken made "the best wines since [their] famed 83's ... our initial barrel tastings... showed very ripe, concentrated wines with a firm fruity acid backbone."
The wine is just now arriving at primetime drinking. Notes of fresh apricot, spring flowers and a delicate base of slate-y soil tones jump from the glass. Over the next five years+, the wine will continue to evolve, developing complex secondary notes.
The slate-covered Saarburger Rausch is one of the Saar's greatest vineyards. It produces wines of incredible fineness and elegance with great aging potential.
These are the only bottles available in the U.S. We bought all that we could, but quantities are limited so give us your maximum order and we'll do our best.
