Rabajà is one of Barbaresco's crown jewels.
It is a dazzling wine. The site produces wines of impressive power, but that's only part of the story. Rabajà is above all about completeness and elegance.
For many years, Castello di Verduno's Rabaja has been our go-to wine when it comes to presenting the magic of Rabajà. I tasted the 2016 during my travels through Piedmont last fall and was blown away. I was really impressed by the way the Castello di Verduno wines combined an honest, down to earth drinkability with a sneaky amount of structure and seriousness. The Rabajà was certainly a highlight in the impressive lineup. It is among the most compelling examples of the wine that I've tasted.
Please note that since 2015 two wines from Rabajà are being released, Rabajà and the less expensive Rabajà Bas.
On the 2016 Barbaresco vintage, Antonio Galloni writes, "The young 2016 Barbarescos are some of the most compelling young wines I have tasted in twenty years of visiting the region."
Castello's di Verduno's clearly announces itself as being from an important vintage. There's that impression of intensity married to fineness and detail that only special vintages endow wines with. You get plenty of length and gripping depth while a nimble finesse and ultra-clear high-toned notes add an exciting dynamic element to the wine.
I expect that the 2016 will be a stunner in the decades to come. The wine delivers superb breeding and complexity while presenting staggering value. When you add everything up, you get an exceedingly rare combination of elements that makes for the wine's incredible success. We went deep on this wine and I'm happy to have another opportunity to offer.
