"Mascarello’s 2008 Barolo is a wine of extraordinary elegance... It boasts breathtaking purity in its fruit and fabulous overall balance." -Antonio Galloni

When the dust settles, Bartolo Mascarello may very well have made the wine of the vintage for 2008.

Regardless, I'm confident that their 2008 Barolo will go down as being one of the greats from this historic estate. This is one of the wines that completely floored me during my recent trip through Piedmont and Burgundy.

Without a doubt, this was one of the wines of the trip.

Joe offered out a small parcel to a small group of Barolo fans a month ago (it's worth checking out his offer from January). But after tasting it, I turned over every rock to find enough for a full list offer.

Mascarello's production is small - there's only around 1,000 for the world. It's been extremely hard for us to secure enough wine for a large offering. And while this is a fairly large parcel, you should be warned that quantities are limited.

Last night, just to be sure, I opened a bottle that I had brought back from the estate for the staff just to make sure that (away from the magic of Mascarello's cellar) the bottle was as good as I remembered it. In a word, it was epic.

Bartolo Mascarello's Barolos are some of the greatest and most soulful wines in the world. Bartolo Mascarello was one of the legendary old school producers of Barolo. Now, in the hands of Bartolo's daughter, Maria Teresa, the estate has continued to produce head turning and soulful Barolos. I can confidently say that she is now turning out Barolos at the same level as her father's incredible wines from the 60s and a great stretch of 80s vintages - 82, 85, 89.

The 08 vintage in Piedmont is ultra-classic, pure and precise. It's the first vintage since 2001 that combines such a level of complexity and refinement. Very few vintages deliver such completeness, such harmony.

Galloni captures all this wonderfully when he writes: "The 2008s are highly transparent to site... this is a super-classic vintage that will thrill readers who like vibrant, refined Baroli."

Personally, I'm going very deep on this. I suggest you do the same. This is very special wine in a special vintage. It's as simple as that.
