2000 Drouhin Vosne-Romanée
1er Cru Les Petits Monts
Petits Monts is one of my favorite bottles from Drouhin. And the 2000 is in a really beautiful place right now.
It's a combination that's tough to beat.
Petits Monts' credentials are undeniable. On the map, the Petits Monts site is, literally, a small stone's throw from La Romanée and Richebourg. It sits just upslope and across a tiny pathway from Richebourg, with La Romanée kitty-corner to the southeast.
This helps to explain why Drouhin's Petits Monts is a constant on the buy lists of savvy wine fanatics.
The 2000 is a classic example of Petits Monts. There's the tell-tale velvety depth and subtle layered complexity. Dark fruits are offset by wisps of smoke, spice, moist earth and tea. Overall, the palate is seamless, dripping with class and presented with pitch-perfect harmony.
Petits Monts is owned by Véronique. It's hard not to think that she puts a little extra love into this wine. Drouhin's plot in Petits Monts is farmed biodynamically, Véronique having told us that experiments with biodynamic practices showed a clear improvement in the quality of the fruit - enough to warrant the total crossover. Indeed, this is an extra au naturel plot, worked by horse and plow as there's no path for a tractor.
Since it's New Year's Eve and we're slammed, I'm going to wrap this up. I should mention that it's rare for us to see back-vintages of Drouhin's Petits Monts. These are the only bottles of 2000 in the country.

Burghound: "Bright, extremely elegant and beautifully expressive mix of red and black fruit combines seamlessly with supple, relatively fine, rich flavors culminating is a long and slightly warm finish. There is a touch of torrefaction and the tannins are soft and round. Good persistence here. Consistent notes."
