Lafarge's Volnay punches above its weight class.
Lafarge is one of our favorite producers; there is just something about the delineation, the fine-ness, the purity, and the understated grace of these wines.
Also, the outrageous top-to-bottom quality of Lafarge's range blows us away. Everything from their Aligote up to their mighty Clos des Chenes is stunning and a benchmark in its own right.
With that said, the Volnay is one of my go-to bottles. It's a wine that I stash in my cellar in quantity. Few village red Burgundies punch above their weight class the way that Lafarge's Volnay does.
Lafarge's Volnay struts a stony rigor, an energy, and a seriousness and complexity that's exceedingly rare for the category. There’s an understated gracefulness and a tensile and beautiful lift.
The 2018 is a classic example of a warm vintage elevating villages wines to a very high level. Lafarge produced some of the best wines of the vintage. In his coverage, Burghound notes, "I agree with Lafarge's take that the domaine's reds are excellent." Nowhere is this more obvious than the Volnay AC. It shows mineral elegance and a terroir-soaked profile with an uncommon punch and breeding.
I strongly advise you to stock up. This is a bottle that over-delivers in a big way. Â

Burghound: "This is also wonderfully fresh and bright with its nicely elegant red cherry, currant, spice and softly earth-inflected aromas. Once again, the medium weight flavors possess a really lovely texture along with evident minerality on the balanced and sneaky long finish. This beautifully harmonious effort should age well over the mid-term."
