As Parker notes, the cool 2006 vintage from this Sonoma icon drifts towards Burgundian in style, if a bit more luxurious and Baroque, boasting the ripe fruit we covet from California, but also dishing out piles of wet rocks and driving acidity that allude to the Old World. This New World-Old World interplay results in a wine that is drinking deliciously right now but, due to its tightly-wound core, still has an alluring seven to eight years on it.
Today's six-pack pricing makes witnessing this wine's evolution very practical.
Kistler has become one of the producers to know out of Sonoma, where proprietors Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler specialize in single-vineyard Chardonnay (they also turn out very formidable Pinot Noir). They call their Vine Hill vineyard in the cooler-climate Russian River Valley a "superlative" site that turns out wildly concentrated and complex Chardonnay. This particular site was home to a vineyard in the late 1800s until Prohibition put a damper on the show and an apple orchard in its place. In 1988, Kistler and Bixler saw the area's potential and brought grapes back to the site in the form of a low-yielding Chardonnay clone. Clearly, the chances of apples returning now are slim to none.
2006 gifted moderate to coolish weather to Vine Hill, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, providing perfectly balanced, concentrated yet crisp fruit without the fat, extroverted juiciness that can often weigh down California Chardonnay. The oak influence is subtle and well-integrated, providing the wine with added structure and texture more than flavor. The end result is a wine that proves the Russian River Valley is turning out some of California's best Chardonnay.
We took as much of this as we could, but considering our documented demand for Kistler and the fact that this is the lowest price out there, this wine is sure to sell out quickly. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the store at (212) 980-9463 to place your order.
