Benchmark Grüner:
2015 Prager Grüner Veltliner Achleiten Stockkultur

Posted by Joe Salamone

Every year, Prager's precision, finesse and mineral cut place the wines among our favorites in all of Austria.

But the 2015s are special. Years from now, it's easy to imagine looking back on 2015 as one of Prager's great vintages. And this is from a domaine that's turned out no shortage of compelling collections.

Stockkultur is sourced from a tiny .3 hectare plot with a small cluster of nearly 80-year-old vines, quite high within the Achleiten vineyard, which is one of Austria's best sites. "Stockkultur" refers to the way the vines are trained, a single vine with four shoots. This is the traditional way vines were cultivated before the 1950s and it results in extreme vineyard densities - 15,000 vines per hectare.

The 2015 vintage in Austria produced shimmering, pure wines with layered fruit and firm, vibrant and detailed mineral cores. It's a really beautiful combination and it's clear why 2015 is already being called one of the top vintages of the past decade.

Prager's Stockkultur is one of the most detailed and finest Grüners on the planet. In 2015 the wine is remarkably balanced, delivering a haunting combination of power, perfume and complex minerality with beautiful clarity and finesse. The wine's intensity is lifted by a vibrant acidity, driving home how nimble and finely tuned the vintage was.

Prager is one of our favorite producers in all of Austria, 2015 was an exceptional vintage and Stockkultur is benchmark Grüner. We'll leave it at that.

2015 Prager Grüner Veltliner Achleiten Stockkultur

Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "From a vineyard planted in 1938, therefore with thick-skinned berries, the 2015 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten Stockkultur displays a very deep, pure and stony bouquet with herbal, almost ether flavors on gneiss rocks. Very intense and concentrated on the palate, with a lovely juicy fruit and lots of salt and stones, this is a very elegant, salty, highly complex and expressive Veltliner of great elegance, finesse and complexity. It is perfectly balanced and very long"
