"Wines in a style you will not encounter anywhere else in Austria: Blaufränkisch vinified as if it were Grand Cru Burgundy."
-David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate
When we first tasted Moric's wines in 2008, we were blown away by them. We've grown even fonder of the wines over the years.
Schildknecht's quote gets to the heart of what makes us so obsessed with Moric's wines. Moric's Blaufränkisch showcases the grape at its most precise, with ethereal textures and dancing elegance.
For us, Moric's Blaufränkisch are Austria's greatest red wines.
Today, we're happy to offer Moric's 2010 Blaufränkisch Reserve at $47.95 on bottles and $44.95 on 3-packs.
Moric's wines are so much about texture, washing over the palate like layers of satin, bright red fruit underscored by cassis, dark licorice, dried grasses, eucalyptus, pulverized cooking spices, pepper, soy and earth.
The snap and vigor of the 2010 vintage provided Moric's Roland Velich the perfect stage to craft a pure, authentic expression of Blaufränkisch.
What's Moric's Blaufränkisch like? Roland always says that Blaufrankisch is something like Nebbiolo (Barolo and Barbaresco), Northern Rhône Syrah and Burgundy all wrapped together and if that sounds good, well, it is.
The easiest way to clarify the Burgundian comparison is to say that it has the silken ethereal textures of Chambolle with the detail and finesse of Volnay.
The foundation of Moric is, as it should be, the vineyards. Velich focuses on two parcels in the villages of Neckenmarkt and Lutzmannsberg with very old vines - we're talking up to, and over, 100 years old, found in Austria's Burgenland. Low yields, vinifications with natural yeasts in open-top fermenters. Whereas many winemakers in Austria have yet to find the balance between concentration and new wood, the wines of Moric have nailed it.
Moric's are some of our favorite reds out there. The purity, the clarity of expression is just that compelling. The response to our previous offers have always been enthusiastic. Our parcel is fairly small. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
