This may be the best parcel of wine that I've landed this year.
Both are among the greatest wines of Volnay, and both are from what is likely my favorite red Burgundy vintage of the past few decades.Â
For red Burgundy, the 2010 vintage is all about a marriage of terroir-saturated clarity and a weightless intensity. The wines have been captivating since day one, but the 2010s that I've recently tasted have been stunning.
In 2010, D'Angerville and Lafon both produced some of the best red wines that I've tasted from these historic domaines.

Lafon's whites get so much attention, especially his rare Montrachet, that his work in Volnay is, sadly, overlooked. Lafon's Santenots is one of the most important wines in Volnay.Â
Santenots is a richer site with clay soils and hard rock underneath. The magic of Lafon's 2010 is that it takes the site's textural power and imbues it with an energetic radiance.Â
The 2010 has clear and explosive notes of dark fruits, herbs, spice, and stone. It's intensely concentrated while being finely etched and having a sleek and focused drive.Â
Moving to Clos des Ducs, this is a special site, and it shows. Ducs is a 2.4-hectare monopole that can trace its roots back at least 500 years. It has a high elevation at 324 meters and is a steep, southeast-facing slope with chalky soils.
The 2010 combines a serious architecture with an amazing impression of weightlessness. There's an outrageous balance and precision to the wine. It delivers a beautiful core of polished and tensile minerality. There are also pristine notes of the red fruits, spice, and earth.Â
Before wrapping up, I'll mention that this is a very modest parcel. Please give us your ideal order, and we'll try our best.Â
