Brilliance in the Storm
2013 Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs
D'Angerville's 2013's stand out for their striking clarity and precision.
The 2013 Ducs distills the site down to its essence. And it's absolutely captivating.
There's no point dancing around the fact that the Côtes de Beaune had a really tough go at it in 2013. From flowering to harvest, the region was beset with difficult growing conditions and suffered through a historical hail storm in July.
There's also no reason to be squeamish about the fact that d'Angerville produced a stunning cast of wines in 2013 with Ducs leading the charge. It's an astonishing success.
We have to give a lot of credit to d'Angerville's incredibly rigorous selection and work in the cellar. But it cannot be overlooked that Ducs is a great site and in vintages like 2013 it really pays off.
D'Angerville's 2.4-hectare monopole Clos des Ducs is one of Volnay's best sites. This steep, chalky site produces wines of singular intensity and breeding. It has no trouble competing with Grand Crus.
In 2013, the class and nobility of the Ducs is undeniable. There's a gloriously radiant expression of minerality and earth with complex red fruits, herbs and spice. It has a sleek, chalk inflected tension and ultra-fine finish. Burghound notes it is "the most complete wine in the range."
The 2013 edition of Clos des Ducs is strikingly clear and gorgeously precise. Stylistically, Burghound places the 2013 between the 2008 and 2011, although more concentrated and less austere.
It is the more challenging vintages like 2013 that reveal the brilliance of elite winemaking and highlight the superiority of sites like Clos des Ducs. As expected, yields were way down so we only have a limited quantity available. Please let us know your ideal order and we'll do our best.
