Brunello's Old Guard
2013 Cerbaiona Brunello di Montalcino

Posted by Ian McFadden

Cerbaiona makes a mere 650 case of Brunello per vintage.

This is a shame because Cerbaiona represents authentic, honest Brunello at the highest level of winemaking.

Cerbaiona is all about perfumed aromatics, balance and finesse. If you're looking for examples of how graceful and profound Brunello can be, Cerbaiona should be one of your first stops.

In 2013, you can expect Cerbaiona Brunello to be stunning. The 2013 vintage saw a cool, wet spring and a beautiful July, August and September. What resulted are wines of incredible purity, focus and class.

This is exactly the conditions where Cerbaiona thrives. In vintages like 2013, the wine boasts a soaring complexity. The layers of spice, red fruits, flowers, incense, herbs and earth are simply amazing in their detail and multifaceted presentation. This is complemented by a luxurious texture.

Cerbaiona has always served as an inspiration for what Brunello can and should be. The Molinari family of Cerbaiona is part of a handful of surviving traditionalists in Montalcino who follow the kind of old school practices that produce stirringly soulful wines. In 2015, Diego and Nora Molinari, who had reached old age, decided to sell the winery to a group of investors.

Cerbaiona has provided me with many of the most memorable bottles of aged Brunello that I've drunk. This is Brunello exactly as I like it. Very happy to offer.
