Bulletproof Burgundy Value:
2017 Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges Vieilles Vignes

Posted by Ian McFadden

Chevillon’s NSG consistently outperforms its category and the 2017 vintage transcends an already high bar.

Chevillon's style is deep and structured - they are what we reach for when seeking ruggedly-honest, serious Burgundy.

In 2017, things switch gears. In this vintage, Chevillon created something different - an electric, perfumed, and profoundly exciting NSG.

If you ask a winemaker from Burgundy to describe the 2017 vintage, many will respond with a single word: Joyful!

I've been really impressed with how Nuits-St-Georges performed in 2017. It's clearly one of the appellations that really succeeded in this vintage. You're left with the impression that Chevillon's 2017 dovetailed perfectly and, at points, in improbable ways with Nuits burly structure.

For Domaine Chevillon, the 2017 vintage resulted in a brightness and clarity that perfectly complements their slightly wild, intense style. The 2017 NSG still delivers the soulful quality we love, but there’s a distinct lift and immediately appealing texture. There's a shimmering and effusive aromatic quality that will surprise (and impress) Chevillon fans.

Chevillon is my go-to for value in villages-level red Burgundy. In terms of ageablity and outright quality, it can compete with the likes of Roumier, Mugneret-Gibourg, and Fourrier. However, Chevillon clocks in at a fraction of the cost.

There are few domaines that I respect as much as Chevillon and their NSG is one of the village wines that I buy for my cellar every year. We’ve had frequent opportunities to taste the NSG with a decade or more of age and they consistently show beautifully. The 2017 has an energy and balance that promises it will be exciting to track over the next decade or more.
