Few producers capture my imagination like Jouan.
His wines are some of the most mysterious, beautiful and subtle Burgundies I know.
For a long time, Jouan’s wines remained little known, partly because there’s so little of it to go around, and partly because those in the know buy it up quickly. The group of those in the know has clearly widened: every time we offer Jouan’s wines they sell out immediately.
We love Jouan’s entire range of wines, but it’s his village wines that we drink most often, especially the Chambolle-Musigny.
The Chambolle is always supremely graceful with a hauntingly gorgeous perfume. This is a wine of transparency and heart-breaking delicacy. It always strikes me just how intricate, expressive, and profoundly soulful it is.
The 2017 Chambolle shows all the hallmarks of a great vintage. Indeed, if you ask a winemaker in Burgundy to describe the vintage, many will respond with a single word: joyful! After several painful years of reduced crops due to frost damage, 2017 was a much needed return to normalcy. And in a year with relatively few curveballs from Mother Nature, producers had more freedom to realize their desired style - and Jouan’s 2017s are some of the best I’ve tasted.
Jouan’s wines have become an obsession. I’m haunted by their depth of complexity and subtle brilliance. If you’ve tried Jouan’s wines before, you understand how easy it is to become obsessed. If you haven’t, I encourage you to experience just how unique and impressive his wines are.
