IMMEASURABLE POTENTIAL
2005 Chandon de Briailles
Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Ile des Vergelesses"
Yes Virginia, there is GREAT Burgundy for Under $50
"A classy, pure, refined and ultra-elegant nose...flavors blessed with laser-like precision...an exercise in understatement and harmony." - Burghound
For those of you looking for a steal on ageworthy red Burgundy from the greatest vintage of this young century - this is an offer NOT TO MISS.
Clive Coates calls this wine one of the gems of Chandon, further insisting that the estate's parcels in the Ile des Vergelesses merit Grand Cru status - we're talking old vines going back to 1938.
But to us, François and Claude de Nicolay are simply quiet Burgundian rockstars.
The wines they make at the Chandon de Briailles are absolutely uncompromising, traditional...soulful. Spend some time in the cellars of serious Burgundy collectors and along with the elite regulars (Roumier, Rousseau, Bachelet, DRC, etc) you very often come across the "quieter" greats - Fourrier, Mugneret-Gibourg...and Chandon de Briailles.
After all, at this point in the evolution of mankind and winemaking, we know how to make flashy reds that blanket the palate with sugar and plush fruit. What is more difficult, elusive even in this age of technology, is making a wine that is honest, that is balanced and transparent.
A wine that is quiet enough to provide space for reflection and deep enough to reward that reflection.
Today, we present an epic 1er Cru red Burgundy of traditional, even simple, beauty.
It is an absolute favorite of ours (a bottle myself, Joe, Stephen and Tom are all personally cellaring) and because subtlety is not obvious, and because we found a very well priced parcel, the price is exceptionally low, down to $45.22 on the 4-pack purchase.
The Burghound's tasting note - below - *perfectly* captures the detailed beauty of this wine and its immense potential.
Honestly, it captures it so well we won't add anything, except that this is a wine that deserves to be cellared. We'd normally write something like, "while this wine is drinking well now, consider cellaring a 4- or 6-pack." Not the case here - this is not worth drinking now. Seriously. It might be enjoyable enough, but in a few years this wine will be absolutely BONKERS-GOOD! We can almost guarantee you'll be wishing you had bought more. Buy a bottle today and in a few years you'll wish you had bought four. Spring for four and you'll wish you had tucked away a case.
Nothing at Chandon de Briailles is obvious or easy. While François and Claude do farm a small parcel of the Grand Cru Corton Clos-du-Roi, the majority of their energy is spent tending to great sites that are well under the radar - Iles des Vergelesses the star among them. They farm their 14 hectares organically and biodynamically and in the great 2005 vintage, they report a near-perfect harvest. The fruit was intense, with enormous concentration.
At an infantile four years post-vintage, this wine has not yet begun to sing. When it does however, it promises to be simply spectacular.
We have one parcel, less than 10 cases *total* - please email us at offers@crushwineco.com or call the store at (212) 980-9463 to order. All orders subject to confirmation.

Burghound: "A classy, pure, refined and ultra elegant nose of crushed red pinot, raspberry and subtle earth notes complements the focused, spicy and intense medium full flavors blessed with laser-like precision on the textured, cool and penetrating finale.
